China’s ‘Golden Week’ Sensation Signals Strong Economic Recovery

Some 637 million people traveled within China, spending the equivalent of tens of billions of dollars in celebration of the country’s annual ‘Golden Week’, at a time when China, one of the few that have successfully contained the COVID-19 virus, is craving for to massive consumption to stimulate the economy.

According to Chinese authorities, some 637 million tourists took a domestic trip during the eight-day long holiday, generating domestic tourism revenue of 466.56 billion yuan (69.6 billion USD). The country’s economy has swiftly bounced as the transportation industry and tourist industry have experienced a full recovery.

During the 8-day holiday, the number of daily visitors to the Yellow Crane Tower remained at 22,000, and on the last day of the holiday, the number of visitors jumped to 24,505, registering a phenomenal increase of 393% compared to the same period last year. Vehicles queuing up outside scenic area stretched several hundred meters. It's hard to imagine that Wuhan, once hit hard by the COVID-19 epidemic earlier this year and was locked down for 76 days has made a swift comeback. As reported by New York Times, the fact that millions of people traveled, dining out and shopping clearly signaled an economic recovery from the epidemic.




According to experts, China’s tourist spending has significantly increased as consumer confidence soars. The Chinese economy booked a 3.2% increase in the second quarter over the first three months.
